The “Gebhardt Collection” was once the largest private collection in the Erzgebirge. It still testifies to the enthusiasm of a simple craftsman who was blessed with an extraordinary talent.
Coins, weapons, handicrafts... Bruno Gebhardt collected anything of value and interest. His passion for collecting was limitless; his spirit of exploration remarkable. Born a farmer’s son in Kühnhaide in 1894, his life was laid out for him and he was not destined for an academic career. Nevertheless, ‘Brun’, as he was called by the locals, managed to build up a collection of rarities unlike any other in the Erzgebirge, which enchants with tin and amazes with samurai armour. The collection encompasses more than 60 specialist areas and brought the big wide world to Bruno Gebhardt’s small home. He had a meticulous approach to collection and researched his treasures from near and far. This is evidenced by his impressive private library, which lay forgotten in the museum repository for many years. It provides revealing insights into his collection and research activities, and now forms part of the exhibition as a newly established display library, encouraging visitors to read and research. The museum is a captivating place, with a vast array of rarities and curiosities displayed between the walls of the architecturally fascinating Austel Villa. The manufacturer’s villa, named after its owner Alexander Gustav Friedrich Austel, was built between 1885 and 1886 in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its original interior design has been preserved. This includes parquet floors, elaborate stucco ceilings, wall and ceiling paintings, double-winged entrance doors and original windows. The Austelpark is situated directly adjacent to the villa. It is built for walkers, with contradictory design elements: An English-style landscaped park, built around 1890, meets caves, tunnel entrances, bastions and lion fountains. The Austel villa’s stylish park restaurant invites you to linger for a while. On sunny days, it also serves customers under the shady trees.
